Scope and Contents

Beming the overall title "Pioneers[:] ... McLaughlin and Kinder Famililies," the total history which is this collection breaks into distinct sections. The first section, a history of the McLaughlin family, offers insights into early Indianapolis. This prologue of McLaughlin histrny is a rich source of family names, including the Polk family, of which President James K. Polk was a member. In addition to memories of early Irvington, Loekerbie, the Grand Opera House, the old state house, and one person's meeting Abraham Lincoln, a narrative on pioneer life dating back to 1836. At page 12, this compilation becomes a series of individual obituaries -- specifically of Mrs. Maria W. Kinder, Mrs. David M. Boyd, William T. Clark, Rachel Kinder Clark, Mrs. Igoe (Nancy Kinder Igoe), William H. McLaughlin, Elizabeth McLaughlin, and Willie McLaughlin. At page 25, a second family history, "The Kinder Family," begins. This history contains a poem by Saral1 T. Bolton (which is not in her Collected Works), written in the memory of Captain Trustin B. Kinder. The compilation closes with a 2-page outline entitled "The Kinder and McLaughlin Families," which dated 1950 in which Mary McLaughlin lists the descendents from four marriages: Isaac and Maria Brown Kinder, Nancy Kinder and Martin Igoe, Mada Kinder and William H. McLaughlin, and Mary Kinder and Oliver Morton Trumbull. Item Listing: • 1950. 35-page family history.

Mary McLaughlin, the compiler and author of these family histories, was the wife of a descendent of Harry McLaughlin, whose family came to Indiana from Virginia, through Kentucky.
