Indiana Arts Commission collection

 Collection — Folder: S2045
Identifier: S2045

Scope and Contents

This collection includes 31 completed "Booking Theatre/Auditoria" questionnaires created by the Indiana Art Commission (IAC) in 1975 to collect information regarding various venues around the state, which were later used in the IAC's Arts and Crafts Directory (1976). The information gathered through the questionnaire included the venue's name, address, seating capacity, year built, rental fee, and contact information. Only 26 theatres and auditoriums were listed in the directory, with the remaining six that returned the questionnaire not being added due to the facility not being available for rental.

Historical Note

In January 1964, Indiana's first arts commission, the Governor's Commission on the Arts, was created through an executive order by Governor Matthew Welsh. His successor, Governor Roger Branigin, took office in January 1965 and used an executive order to extend the commission's activities. In July 1965, legislation creating the Indiana Arts Commission (IAC) as a state agency went into effect with an annual budget of $12,500. The IAC's mission is to "positively impact the cultural, economic and educational climate of Indiana by providing responsible leadership for and public stewarship of artistic resources" and is committed to creating equitable access to the arts for all Indiana residents.
