Scope and Contents

The collection consists of a newspaper clipping that makes mention of George Holman, a relative of Joseph, and a notebook containing Holman’s personal recollections on a number of topics. He covers events which occurred from 1788 to 1831. The last nine pages are an autobiography.

Biographical Note

Joseph Holman was born on October 1, 1788, in Woodford County, Kentucky. He moved to Wayne County, Indiana, around 1805, and lived in several Indiana counties before returning to Wayne County in 1843. In 1810, Holman married Lydia Overman with whom he had twelve children. Holman served in the War of 1812. He worked in the tanning, mercantile, and pork businesses in the 1820s, as a farmer from 1833 to 1842, and as the director of the Fort Wayne and Southern Railroad from 1853. Holman, a Democrat, was a member of the territorial House of Representatives (1815) and a member of the Constitutional Convention (1816). He also served in the Indiana House of Representatives (1816-1822), representing Wayne, Randolph, Fayette, Allen, Cass, Elkhart, and St. Joseph counties during his various terms.
