Scope and Contents
This collection includes photocopies (poor quality) of two letters written by Henry W. Feldwisch and sent to family while he served with the 10th Indiana Cavalry during the U.S. Civil War. Written in German, one letter was sent from Camp Stansifer, Indiana (transcribed as Georgia in error) on March 28, 1864 and the other was sent December 8, 1864 from Nashville, Tennessee. The collection also includes photocopies of an undated photograph of Henry; transcriptions of eight letters, including the two mentioned above, sent by Henry from March to December, 1864 to his family and to a friend and "brother in Christ"; and a transcription of a February 4, 1865 letter written by his father to "Dear Children" regarding Henry's imprisonment and other family matters.

Biographical Note
Henry W. Feldwisch was born around 1843 in Dubois County, Indiana, the son of Herman Heinrich and Chrestina Feldwisch. He mustered into Company M, 10th Indiana Cavalry on March 8, 1864. He was taken prisoner on December 17, 1864 at Hollow Tree Gap, Tennessee and taken to Andersonville prison. He died at the prison on March 4, 1865.
