This collection includes correspondence ranging from 1836-1978 and a typescript history written by Ruth Craft. The history is a collection of personal recollections and stories she had heard from other residents of Washington Township. Topics covered are Indiana villages, gold mines, stage coaches, taverns and inns, the first railroad in the township, postal services, the first community telephone, businesses, and schools. Mrs. Craft also identifies the ancestry of the first settlers of Washington Township.

Biographical Note
Ruth H. Craft was born in Washington Township, Putnam County, Indiana on August 14, 1894. As a child shew grew up one-half mile from Manhattan, Indiana, living is a house on the National Road. Mrs. Craft saw the first automobile use the National Road. Her father owned a blacksmith shop and was called upon to pull the first cars from ditches to make repairs on the horseless carriages. Eventually, her father sold gasoline and oil.
