Scope and Contents

This collection contains correspondence, indentures, deeds, tax receipts, and other legal documents of the Brady family of Fountain and Warren counties in Indiana ranging from 1801 to 1890. The collection includes the appraisal and auction sale documents (written in French) regarding the personal effects of James Brady that were left with Senateur Babin in Iberville, Louisiana (December, 1801); receipts and legal documents of John Brady (1811-1845) and William Brady (1838-1889); correspondence from Brady family members serving in the Civil War (1861-1865); several letters from Francis M. Coon while he served with Company A, 15th Battery, Indiana Light Artillery (1862-1864); a few pages from journals kept by Oliver Brady from August, 1863, May, 1865, and April, 1867; William Brady's will (1889); recipes for Rhubarb Wine and a remedy for "severe lung trouble" (undated); and a description of "magnetizing" according to Deleuze (undated).

Biographical Note

John Brady (1779-1846) was an early settler of Fountain County, Indiana. He married Jane Bell (1785-1862) and they had fourteen children: Elizabeth, James, Jacob, Samuel, Abraham, Mary Ann, Jane, William, Nancy, Joseph, Sims, Franklin, Oliver, and Harriett. William (1814-1889) married Mary A. Jacobs on August 12, 1841 and they had one son, Oliver (1842-1921). After the death of his first wife he married Emily Maria Bowers (1836-1924) and moved to Warren County, Indiana. Many of the Brady men and their cousins served in the Civil War, including James Brady in Company A, 15th Indiana Regiment; Joseph V. Brady in Company C, 58th Illinois Regiment; Oliver Brady in Company H, 116th Indiana Regiment and Company B, 44th Indiana Regiment; Joseph H. Liggins in Company I, 5th Regiment Indiana Cavalry; Dryden Vankirk in Company G, 10th Indiana Regiment; and Frank Watson in Company K, 1st Regiment Iowa Cavalry.
