In an Indianapolis city directory of 1899, Pettis Dry Goods Company listed the following as its basic goods of trade: "Dry Goods, Cloaks, Millinery, Notions, Carpets, Boots, and Shoes." The store was located at 25-33 East Washington Street, Indianapolis, Indiana. Officers of the company in 1899 were A. Swan Brown, President; James A. Swan, Treasurer: and George A. Gay, General Manager.
