Biographical Note
Carl Mathes was blind from his birth in 1896, was married to Mary A. Mathes (to whom he dictated his compositions), and was a composer, organ player, teacher and linguist. His composition, a symphonic suite called "Five Tone Pictures" was performed by the New York Civic Orchestra, directed by Eugene Plotnikoff, in February. 1938. In that same year, he was awarded a bronze medal for success "in competition with normal people." A Christmas carol program he arranged for the choir of Our Lady of Hungary Church in South Bend was taped and broadcast to countries behind the Iron Curtain by the Voice of America, probably in the 1950s.
He was a professor at Notre Dame's Department of Music, and many of his masses, instrumental compositions and songs have been performed by the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra, which was conducted by his friend, Eugene Ormandy. He died on May 12, 1957.
