Administrative History

Kendallville had a fairground, which featured a racetrack, between 1846 and the Civil War. It is not known what activities took place there, besides a Civil War encampment. The county fair was first held in Albion, then moved to Ligonier in 1865, and in 1883, October 9-13, Kendallville held its first fair, on land owned by John Mitchell and leased to the fair until 1895, when the stockholders purchased it. Boys and girls' 4-H club work was inaugurated at the fair in 1920.The Ligonier Fair was eventually eclipsed by the Kendallville Fair, which officially became the Noble County Fair.
