Biographical Note

James Thomas Johnston was born January 19, 1839 in Putnam County, Indiana. He served with the 71st Regiment, Indiana Volunteers as a sergeant from 1862-63; as a 2nd lieutenant with the 8th Regiment, Tennessee Calvary, 1863; quartermaster sergeant 133rd Regiment, Indiana Volunteers, 1864; quartermaster 149th Regiment, Indiana Volunteers in 1865. He studied law at the Indiana Asbury (now DePauw) University law school and was admitted to the bar in 1866. He married Mattie M. Morrison Feb. 14, 1866 in Putnam County, with whom he had one child and who died in 1872. They moved to Parke County in 1866. He worked as a lawyer and farmer. He married Lucy Daly in 1873. He served as the Putnam County deputy treasurer, the 10th court of common pleas district prosecuting attorney, 1866-1868, represented Parke County in the Indiana House in 1869 and Parke and Vermillion Counties in the Indiana Senate from 1875-1877. He was a presidential elector in 1872 and was the Representative for the 8th Indiana Congressional district from 1885-8189. He ran, unsuccessfully for governor, in 1896. He died July 14, 1904 and is buried in the Rockville Cemetery in Rockville, Parke County, Indiana.
