Administrative History

The Indiana General Assembly created the State Board of Agriculture in 1851, which founded the Indiana State Fair in 1852, held at what is now Military Park in Indianapolis. The total fair budget was $4,700.00. It was held in Lafayette in 1853, Madison in 1854, Indianapolis 1855-1858, New Albany 1859, no fair was held in 1861, in Indianapolis through the Civil War years, Fort Wayne 1865, returning permanently to Indianapolis. The "Camp Morton" fairgrounds on the old northside of Indianapolis was the 2nd site for the annual fair. The 3rd and current site for the fairgrounds is on 38th Street, west of Fall Creek Parkway, and it opened in 1892. The fair in 1852 confined itself to adult farmers and approaches to agriculture, but Purdue University has begun and rapidly increased the participation of future agricultural leaders of Indiana through its club work with youth.
