Scope and Contents

This collection includes autographed poems and writings, pencil drawings and official documents from Ignatius Brown and others in Indiana, New Orleans, Louisiana; Kentucky, Missouri and Tennessee ranging from 1856 to 1861 and regarding life, Civil War battles, and a vessel clearance from port.

There is also an oversize folder containing editions of newspapers including the Weekly Indiana Citizen, the Central Normal News, and the Normal Herald, ranging from 1859 to 1886 (OB221).

Biographical Note

Ignatius Brown was born in Indianapolis, Indiana on August 11, 1831. He attended Marion County Seminary and received his law degree from Indiana University in 1852. Brown married to Elizabeth Marsee on May 5, 1857, and they had three children. He worked in his father's law office but practiced on his own after his father's death. Brown was active in politics in the Republican Party and organized the first Board of Trade in Indianapolis. He prepared historical sketches of Indianapolis for directories. Ignatius Brown died on July 8, 1903 and was buried in the Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis, Indiana.
