Scope and Contents

This collection contains a copy book used by several members of the Patrick family of Jennings County, Indiana and includes account entries made by Jeremiah Patrick regarding his duties as treasurer of district No. 4, Township No. 6, Range 9 East (1846-1849); poetry and songs written by Lora and Mariah Jane "Jennie" Patrick (1868-1870, undated); and poems and autographs from family and friends (1869-1894, undated). The collection also contains a clipping of the poem "Yuba Dam" from the North Vernon, Indiana newspaper The Plain Dealer on December 2, 1873 and two copies of Ada May Hole's 1901 North Vernon High School commencement program.

Biographical Note

Jeremiah Patrick (1795-1871) was born in North Carolina and moved to Clark County, Indiana as a young man. There he married Catherine Holeman (1802-1878) in 1819 and they later moved to Jennings County. Jeremiah's brother William D.(1808-1880) also came to Jennings County and married Catherine Carney (1809-1864) in 1831. They had several children, including daughters Mariah Jane (1846-1933) and Lora Ann (1851-1934). Lora married Joseph Hole (1849-1917) in 1870 and they had four children. Their daughter Ada May (1881-1971) was a 1901 graduate of North Vernon High School.
