This collection includes four diaries of Hiram A. Pratt of Waveland, Indiana. The diaries are from 1866, 1869, 1882, and 1887 and contain entries about Pratt's daily activities and expenditures, the weather, church attendance, and news about family and friends.

Biographical Note

Hiram Austin Pratt was born April 20, 1840 on a farm in Parke County, Indiana to Erastus and Elizabeth Pratt. He moved with his family to Wapello County, Iowa in the 1850s. On August 8, 1862, Pratt enlisted as a private with Company B, 36th Regiment Iowa Volunteers during the U.S. Civil War. On August 24, 1864, he was taken prisoner during the battle on Mark's Mill in Arkansas. After his honorable discharge on August 24, 1865, Pratt moved back to Indiana and took up residence in Waveland. He married Eliza F. Shaw on September 6, 1866 and they adopted a son, William "Willie". After the death of Eliza on October 12, 1887, Pratt married Sarah Evaline McMains on October 9, 1888. He was a barber by trade and passed away at the age of 74 on October 12, 1914.
