Scope and Contents

This collection consists of photocopied documents regarding George Quincy Wilkinson and his family of Henry County, Indiana. The collection includes a November 30, 1839 contract to teach a "common English school" for three months; a list of children in the classes in 1840 and 1841 and a list of students with the number of days they were sent to school; an undated photograph of Wilkinson; a 1978 one paragraph essay about the Wilkinson farm, the Hog Pen Branch stream and hog butchering; and two items created by Elva Wilkinson Coombs: a "Family Group Sheet" dated January 5, 1979 and a biographical sketch of Wilkinson and his family dated January 5, 1981.

Biographical Note

George Quincy Wilkinson was an early pioneer of Henry County Indiana. Born October 15, 1790 in Harrison County, Virginia (now West Virginia), he was the son of Joseph and June (Reed) Wilkinson. He married Sarah "Sallie" Rose (1803-1882) in 1829 and they had ten children. The family moved to Illinois in 1835, living in Tazewell County and Putnam County before moving to Henry County, Indiana in 1836. George was a teacher and farmer and died at the age of 71 on July 24, 1862.
