Scope and Contents

This collection consists of a bound notepad of 27 pages containing typed copies of poems, monologues, and short essays frequently used for reading and recitation activities circa 1890-1910. The following works are part of the collection: "Poor Little Joe" by David Law Proudfit; "Pain in a Pleasure Boat" by Thomas Hood; "Peter Sorgum in Love: A Capital Yankee Story" by Alf Burnett; "Home Again" by unknown author; "Uncle Pete and Marse George" by unknown author; "Mrs. Britzenhoeffer's Trouble" by George Kyle; "Pro and Con" by Leland T. Powers; "How Salvator Won" by Ella Wheeler Wilcox; "The One-Legged Goose" by F. Hokinson Smith; and "Mrs. Brindles Music Lesson" by unknown author. The majority of these works are examples of dialect writing.

Biographical Note

The ten literary works in this collection were written by different authors: David Law Proudfit, jounalist and poet (1842-1897); Thomas Hood, English poet, journalist and humorist (1799-1845); Alfred "Alf" Burnett, author and humorist (1824-1884); George Kyle, actor and author (1854-1892); Leland T. Powers (1857-1920), educator, author and actor; Ella Wheeler Wilcox (1850-1919), author and poet; F.(Francis) Hopkinson Smith (1838-1915), author, artist and engineer; and three unknown authors.
