Historical Note
On March 2, 1833, the United States Regiment of Dragoons was created by Congress. Lemuel Ford of Charlestown, Clark County, Indiana was appointed a captain of Company G in the fall of 1833 and directed to raise a company of 70 men from Indiana for a term of 3 years service. Prior to his appointment with the Dragoons, Ford had served as captain with the Mounted Rangers, a volunteer battalion authorized by Congress to defend the frontier following the Black Hawk War of 1832.
