Historical Note
The Indiana Council for the Encouragement of Patriotism, Inc. was founded on January 17, 1968 by Mary Lou Kieswetter of Munster, Indiana. The following year, the organization became the National Council for the Encouragement of Patriotism, Inc. The Council's main goal was to encourage Americans to show love for their country and respect the flag. The Council got U.S. 41 from Copper Beach, Michigan to Miami, Florida proclaimed as the "Highway of Flags" in 1971 and raised money to build the Highway of Flags Servicemen's Memorial located on Highway 41 in Highland, Indiana (dedicated in May 1975). In 1977, the Council promoted the inclusion of "A History of the United States," a 12-volume record collection produced by the Columbia Broadcasting System under the guidance of historian Henry Steele Commager, as a teaching aid in America's schools.
