Scope and Contents

This collection includes photocopies of the diary kept by Matthias B. Collins while serving with Company I, 33rd Indiana Infantry Regiment during the American Civil War. Written in an 1863 pocket diary, the entries start on January 1 in camp at Danville, Kentucky and continue through to the end of the year. Photocopies of diary were donated by Edna Eugenia (Collins) Morlan, granddaughter of Matthias Collins.

Biographical Note

Mattias B. Collins was born February 18, 1842 in Butler County, Ohio, the son of Jacob and Mary Collins. When he was around nineteen years old, he moved to Indiana and learned the carriage trade. Collins was living in Bartholomew County when he enlisted as a recuit for Company I, 33rd Indiana Infantry Regiment, mustering in on August 15, 1862 and serving until his discharge on June 10, 1865. Collins married Minerva Rominger on March 22,1866 and they had four children. Around 1879, the family moved to Martinsville, Indiana. ollins was serving as city clerk when he died at the age of 54 on April 28, 1896.
