Scope and Contents

This collection includes three items: a February 12,1863 issue of the Indianapolis Daily Journal, with the published memorial and resolutions of the Indiana Soldiers in the Department of the Cumberland that were given to the Indiana General Assembly as a refutation that the soldiers wanted a "cessasion of hostilities" before the rebellion was put down; a July 24, 1863 message sent by Brigadier General Beatty to Lt. Colonel McIntire with an order to detail four men for fatigue duty; and a clipping of a newspaper article titled "How Jeff. Davis Is Starved" and written in response to alleged suffering by Davis from short rations (circa 1866).

Biographical Note

William T. B. McIntire was born in February 1828 in Pike County, Indiana to John and Frances McIntire. He married Rachel Woods Jaquess in November, 1851. On September 12, 1861, he was appointed a captain of Company I, 42nd Indiana Infantry Regiment. McIntire was promoted to major in November 1862, then to lieutenant colonel in July 1863 before resigning on December 12, 1864. Following the war, he moved to Minnesota, living in St. Cloud and then Minneapolis. Following the death of Rachel in 1881, McIntire married Ellen Young in August 1885. The family later moved to Portland, Oregon and he was active in the Portland Grand Army of the Republic Post 3. He died on November 22, 1904.
