Biographical Note
William Jacob Cuppy was born Aug. 23, 1884 to Thomas Jefferson and Mary Frances Stahl Cuppy in Auburn, Indiana. He was the second of three children, including Anna B. and Jack Ralston Cuppy. His family background included French Huguenot and Pennsylvania Dutch influences, as well as pioneers in Whitley County, Indiana. He was graduated from the University of Chicago in 1907, with a Ph. B. and with an M.A. in English in 1914. He served in World War I as a 2nd Lieutenant. He wrote many articles and several books of humor as well as a weekly book review column entitled "Mystery and adventure", for over 4,000 titles. He lived as a recluse in New York City, New York for most of his life.
He died Sept. 19, 1949 and his cremated remains are buried next to his mother in Evergreen Cemetery, Auburn, Indiana. His tombstone reads "American Humorist".
