Scope and Contents

This collection includes a document with accounting entries ranging from 1811 to 1812 regarding transactions between James Beck and Christian Yeazel of Montgomery County, Ohio; an October 26, 1923 indenture between Jacob and Charlotte Blacklidge of Franklin County, Indiana and John McCabe of Ohio for property "laying in Fayette County;" a certificate for the appointment of John McCabe as a member of the committee to meet on May 12, 1841 at Laurel, Indiana regarding the completion of the Whitewater Canal from Brookville to Cambridge [City]; and a document with the bylaws of the White Water Valley Canal Company for "regulating the subscription and mode of payment of the Capital Stock" (circa 1842).

Biographical Note

John McCabe was born on March 23, 1789. He served as a private with Captain James Steele's Company, Ohio Militia during the War of 1812. McCabe and his wife Hannah (1778-1833) later moved to Fayette County, Indiana. Following his wife's death, he married Nancy (Houston) Walling in 1838 and they had two sons, William who died in infancy, and John R. (1843-1906). McCabe died at the age of 60 on May 6, 1849.
