This collection includes correspondence between Wilhelm Scheidt of Columbus, Indiana and Louise Balk of Indianapolis, Indiana, written in German. Also in the collection is one card, presented to Louise titled, "Reward of Merit", with a sprig of honeysuckle; and one promissory note, written in English.

Biographical Note

Wilhelm J. Scheidt was born in Prussia, German Empire around 1844. At six years of age, he departed from Bremen, Germany and arrived to America in New Orleans, Louisiana on October 24, 1850. He became a naturalized citizen in Pennsylvania on March 2, 1894. In 1870, Wilhelm is listed as living in Columbus, Indiana. During 1880, he was a dry goods clerk in Indianapolis, Indiana. Around 1920 he lived in Howard County, Indiana and was retired. His spouse was Louise and they had three children, Lydia L., Louise E., and Emma V.C. Scheidt.
