Biographical Note

Helen Daniels was born in Tipton, Indiana on February 28, 1907, the daughter of Edward and Elizabeth (Staats) Daniels. Her father worked as a lawyer in Tipton, her mother as a housewife. In the 1920s, after the death of her father from diabetes, she moved to Indianapolis, where she held a variety of jobs before becoming a secretary for the Community Service Council. Entranced by the work being done there, she made the decision to attend the Indiana Extension School (later IUPUI), where she earned her undergraduate, and later graduate degree in Social Work. During the course of her 40-year career, she was employed as a social worker for the Community Service Council, the Public Health Center, and the Juvenile Court. During this time, Helen Daniels also worked as a human welfare lobbyist in the Indiana Legislature.
