Biographical Note

John and Mary (Carr) McMurray, early pioneers of Indiana, settled in Owen County in 1822. Their son, Thomas, was born on March 2, 1823, just six weeks before John fell ill and died. Mary and her infant son moved back to live with her father in Nelson County, Kentucky, but returned to Owen County a few years later following her second marriage. Thomas married Christina Porter in 1848 and they had nine children: Lethanna "Letha", Charles, Mary, John, James, Thomas Jasper, Willis, Sarah, and Lillie. The family moved to Johnson County in 1860 and resided there until they moved to Boone County in 1879. Floyd I McMurray, the donor of this collection, was the son of James and the grandson of Thomas McMurray.

The Burget and Burgett families were friends and neighbors of the McMurray family when they resided in Johnson County. Aaron Burget (1843-1900), the son of Valentine and Nancy Burget, married Lucinda Gillaspy in 1863 and they had 9 children: Dillard, William, Tillis, Emma, Mary, Nancy, Sarah, Floyd and Carl. Louisa Burgett (1851-1928) was the daughter of Aaron and Sophia Burget. She married Bluford Richardson and they were the parents of Lewis Bradford Richardson.
