Scope and Contents
This collections includes a certificate, signed by District Judge William A. Woods on October 29, 1888, authorizing the appointment and commission of David I. McCormick as Supervisor of Election for the 2nd Precinct, 15th Ward, Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana. The appointment was directed by Hon. Walter Q. Gresham, Judge of the 7th Judicial Circuit of the United States, and the certificate was also signed by Noble C. Butler, Clerk of the U.S. District Circuit Court.

Biographical / Historical
David Issac McCormick was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, on March 4, 1849, to Joseph McCormick (of the McCormick Creek family) and Mary Elizabeth Hickman. When he was 19, he joined the Union Army as a part of the 159th Indiana Infantry Regiment, serving in the last year of the war. McCormick stayed on with the National Guard after the Civil War and entered service again for the United States, and the 159th Indiana, as part of the Spanish American War. He eventually achieved a rank of Second Lieutenant while in the military and was eventually promoted to Major in the National Guard. Between service, he worked on railroads, in factories, and as an experienced stonecutter. McCormick married Jennie Clay Myers on July 31, 1872, and the couple had four children: Mary Kathryn, Roscoe Elmer, Samuel Eli, and Frederick “Fred” Evanson McCormick. He was a Freemason and avid flag enthusiast, eventually rising to Commissioner of the Indiana Battle Flags Commission from 1909 until he passed away. He cared for the flags of Indiana, the civil war flags and regimental banners of which many are still preserved today. McCormick died on February 15, 1937, and is Buried in Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis, Indiana, Section 49, Lot 106.
