Scope and Contents
This collection includes a March 16, 1862 letter written by Mahala A. Barnett and sent to a George Washington, who was most likely the George Washington from Rochester, Fulton County, Indiana who had enlisted in Company H, 46th Indiana Regiment during the U.S. Civil War. In the letter she mentions family members, the war and wanting the soldiers to come home, and enjoying going to the Good Templer lodge. Addressed to "Dear Brother," she ends her letter by saying that she would remain his friend in "Faith, hope and Charity."

Biographical Note
Mahala A. Barnett was born around 1850 in Fulton County, Indiana, one of eleven children of Thomas W. and Mary (Troutman) Barnett. She is not found on census records after 1860 and neither her father's obituary in 1882 nor her mother's obituary in 1891 name her as one of their five living children.
