Biographical Note
William Claiborne Tarkington was born in 1816 to Jesse H. Tarkington and Mary Tarkington. He was married to Eliza Kay Tarkington and had nine children. He served during the American Civil War from 1861 until 1863.He was promoted to captain by President Abraham Lincoln and appointed Commissary of Subsistence on Brigadier General Joseph J. Reynolds' staff where he served until he resigned in September of 1863. He died on July 19, 1895. He is currently buried in Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis, Indiana.
