Scope and Contents
This collection includes pages 225-255 from Clement R. Stahan's copy of the revised edition of Manual of the Civil War and Key to the Grand Army of the Republic and Kindred Societies, a book written by J. Worth Carnahan and published by the U.S. Army and Navy Historical Association in 1899. The collection includes an army discharge certificate filled out by Strahan with information regarding his February 18, 1866 discharge (p.225); an unused honorable discharge form for the United States Navy (p. 227); the handwritten reminiscences "Military History of Clement R. Strahan, 1862, 1863, 1864, 1865 and 1866" signed and dated by Strahan on October 6, 1902 (p.231-245); a section with the heading "Pensions" (p.250-253); and "Pension Statistics" of Civil War soldiers through June 1898 (p.254-255). The collection also includes a newspaper clipping of a small article titled "Only 32 Out of 1,236 Left" about the 7th Indiana Cavalry reunion in 1916.

Biographical Note
Clement R. Strahan was born January 17, 1847 in Fleming County, Kentucky to Samuel R. and Martha Ann (Hunt) Strahan. In November 1853, he moved with his family to Huntsville, Randolph County, Indiana. In June 1862, at the age of 15, he enlisted in Company D, 69th Indiana Regiment but was discharged in August due to his age. The following year he ran away from home and mustered into Company B, 7th Cavalry at Indianapolis on August 28, 1863. In July 1865, he was transfered to Company D and continued in service with the 7th Cavalry until being discharged at Austin, Texas on February 18, 1866. He married Hannah Ellen Cougill in 1870 and they had eleven children. He died at the age of 65 on August 12, 1912.
