Biographical Note

Joseph Dumont Shipp was born on November 18, 1865, the son of Joseph P. and Juliet (Dumont) Shipp. His father was a partner in the Indianapolis dry goods business Murphy, Hibben and Company. Afflicted with lung issues since childhood, Joseph was in his junior year at DePauw University (Greencastle, Ind.) when he died at the age of 21 on December 17, 1886.
