Scope and Contents

This collection includes the Civil War discharge certificate of Henry C. Barter, drummer of Company F, 25th Indiana Regiment. Barter was discharged on August 18, 1864 and the certificate was given at Chattanooga, Tennessee and signed by 1st Lieutenant Robert G. Shannon on August 22, 1864. In the upper left corner, there is a "Bounty Paid" stamp by E.L. Moore, Paymaster of the United States, dated March 27, 1867.

Biographical Note

Henry Clay Barter was born in December 1844 in Posey County, Indiana. He enrolled in Company F, 25th Indiana Regiment on July 23, 1861 and mustered in on August 19, 1861 for three years service. He was discharged on August 18, 1864. He married Fannie Gordon in 1867 and they had 4 children. Over the years, Mr. Barter lived with his family in Indiana, Kentucky, Illinois, Missouri, and Kansas. A drummer boy during the war, he organized the Civil War Veterans Drum Corps of Wichita around 1907. Following the death of Fannie in 1910, he married Mary Elizabeth Mathews in 1912. He passed away in Wichita on December 26, 1924.
