Scope and Contents
This collection contains photocopies of documents pertaining to George Head’s service with the 21st Regiment, Indiana Infantry and the 1st Regiment, Indiana Heavy Artillery during the U.S. Civil War. Ranging from 1861 to 1866, the collection includes copies of military papers that record Private Head appearing on muster-in rolls, mustering-out rolls, company muster rolls, and in the company descriptive book and return records. The collection also includes copies of the “Declaration of Recruit” and “Volunteer Enlistment” papers he signed by his mark on January 1, 1864 to reenlistment at Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and copies of two documents from September 1865 regarding charges and specifications filed by Provost Marshall I.R. Allen at Pensacola against Head for "conduct to the prejudice of good order and military discipline."

Biographical Note
George W. Head was born April 8, 1840 in Daviess County, Indiana to John and Sarah Ann (Quinn) Head. Following the outbreak of the U.S. Civil War, he enlisted in Company F, 21st Indiana Regiment on July 24, 1861. On February 10, 1863, General Nathaniel Banks, commander of the Army of the Gulf, ordered the regiment to be changed to heavy artillery service and Company F became part of the 1st Regiment, Indiana Heavy Artillery. In January 1864, he reenlisted at Baton Rouge, Louisiana as a veteran and was mustered out of the army on January 10, 1866. He returned to Indiana and engaged in farming. He married Mary E. Moffitt in May 1891 and they were living in Marion, Lawrence County, Indiana when he died on November 11, 1913.
