Newton and Spring Valley Horse Thief Detecting Company minutes

 Collection — Folder: S1829
Identifier: S1829

Scope and Contents

This collection contains one volume of minutes of the Newton and Spring Valley Horse Thief Detective Company meetings held from March, 1864 to September, 1873. The election of officers, the names of men considered for membership, payment of dues, amendments to the group's constitution, and members absent from meetings are some of the information recorded. The volume entries initially refer to the group as the Newton Horse Thief Detecting Company (one meeting referred to it as the "West" Newton), but from August 27, 1866 onward the group was called the Newton and Spring Valley Horse Thief Detecting Company.

Historical Note

The Indiana General Assembly approved an act on March 9, 1852 that authorized "the formation of companies for the detection and apprehension of Horse Thieves and other felons." The act allowed citizens of a county to organize themselves into a company of not less than ten and no more than one hundred members and submit articles of association to their county's Board of Commissioners. Once a company received approval from the commissioners they were considered organized and incorporated and members had the authority of constables to apprehend offenders and recover stolen property.
