Scope and Contents
This collection includes the following items from the Smith family: John W. Smith's February 11, 1867 certificate for "Sublime Prince of the Royal Secret 32," a degree of the Scottish Rite; the May 30, 1976 marriage certificate of Peter J. Hiddinger and Adeline Koller; a handwritten will of Ann J. Allen signed February 5, 1897; the June 10, 1903 marriage license of Albert Millington and Laura M. Smith; a June 12, 1912 handwritten document regarding the presentation of an Odd Fellows jewel to Lou W. Smith; copies of Edwin J. Smith, Jr.'s death certificate and receipts regarding his funeral in December 1954; and a January 20, 1966 letter to Betty and Lou Smith from Hilda and Hildegarde Norton. Other items include an undated letter written by Charlotte Smith to her son Lou about the illness and treatment of Edwin, Jr.; an undated letter from Rose Smith Coleman to her brother Lou W. Smith; a small broadside from the When store of Indianapolis regarding the exhibition in the store of the Astley D.M. Cooper painting "The Morning of the Crucifixion"; and notes and pages from family Bibles containing genealogical information, with the most recent entry recording the marriage of Kathryn Ann Lennington to Daryle Cue on June 6, 1976.

Biographical Note
John W. Smith (1829-1905) moved to Anderson, Indiana from Maryland in 1850. He married Linnie S. Blacklidge (1837-1902) and they had two children, Lou W. Smith (1857-1940) and Rose Smith Coleman (1859-1933). The family moved to Indianapolis in 1872 and father and son opened the J.W. Smith and Son Bakery in 1878. Originally a retail bakery and grocery, it later became a wholesale company.
Lou W. Smith married Laura C. Allen (1856-1930) and they had two children, Edwin J. (1879-1951) and Laura M. Smith Millington (1881-1968). Edwin married Charlotte Hiddinger and they had two sons, Lou J. (1904-1987) and Edwin J., Jr. (1907-1954). Following his father's retirement, Edwin, Sr. owned and operated the family bakery business until 1943 when it closed during World War II. Lou J. married Elizabeth "Betty" Cannon (1908-1969) and they had one daughter, Carolyn Ann Smith Lennington (1929-1993).
