This collection includes two items of correspondence between the Indiana State Library and Carl H. Bratton. The first item, dated October 10, 1836, is a copy of a letter sent to Mr. Bratton requesting copies of the three songs he composed. The second item is Bratton's October 24, 1936 handwritten response.

Biographical Note
Carl Hillis Bratton was born November 9, 1884 in New Ross, Montgomery County, Indiana to Charles Bruce and Henrietta "Etta" (Bailey) Bratton. Starting out on the family farm, he later lived in Indianapolis and Clermont, Indiana. In 1933, he wrote the song, "Serenade to the Rose." He was also the composer of two other songs: "Fer the World Is Full of Roses," with music to words written by James Whitcomb Riley, and "Ol' Man Depression," a song with words written by his mother. In 1943, he married Ruth Vivian (Mcneely) Scheel. They moved to Paris, Tennessee around 1960 and Mr. Bratton passed away there on December 20, 1961.
