Historical Note
The Governor's Voluntary Action Program was created in May 1974 to recognize the outstanding achievements of Indiana volunteers. Nominations were accepted throughout the year accompanied by a statement from the nominator. Though the program was discontinued in 1997, Indiana continued to recognize its volunteers through the Indiana Commission on Commuinity Service and Volunteerism and the Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives, and by Serve Indiana, a division of the Department of Workforce Development that was created in 2014.
