This collection includes 5 letters ranging from March 6, 1951 to October 26, 1951 and written by Dorothy Russo and Donald C. Gallup, curator of the collection of American Literature at Yale University Library, regarding Russo’s request for information about Yale’s holdings of manuscripts and letters of Indiana authors from Crawfordsville, Indiana. Russo published Bibliographical Studies of Seven Authors of Crawfordsville, Indiana: Lew and Susan Wallace, Maurice and Will Thompson, Mary Hannah and Caroline Virginia Krout, and Meredith Nicholson (with Thelma L. Sullivan) in 1952.

Biographical / Historical
Dorothy Ritter Russo was born on August 24, 1900 in Indianapolis to Roscoe and Mary Ritter. She graduated from DePauw University in 1922 and worked as a social worker in New York. She married Anthony J. Russo in 1923 and moved back to Indianapolis with her family in 1929. She and her husband opened the Hoosier Book Shop in 1931 and they began research for the publication of a bibliography of Indiana authors under the sponsorship of the Indiana Historical Society in 1939. Following the death of her husband in 1940, Mrs. Russo continued the project and authored or co-authored five books on Hoosier authors and one book about Indiana medicine. She also worked for the Marion County Public Welfare Department (1953-1970) and passed away at the age of 92 on March 30, 1993.
