Located in Indianapolis, Indiana and incorporated on September 25, 1863, the non-profit, non-denominational cemetery began with 236 acres of land purchased from local farmers for $51,000. Landscape architect Frederick W. Chislett was hired to oversee the construction of the cemetery and served as its superintendent until 1899. Crown Hill is now 555 acres in size and is designated a National Historical Place.
