Scope and Contents

This collection includes a typewritten copy of "Tribute to the Grand Army of the Republic," an address given by Maude L. Rumpler at the presentation of a memorial plaque to the Indiana Soldiers and Sailors Monument by the National Auxiliary to the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War on August 28, 1949. The collection also includes the program from the ceremony.

Biographical / Historical

Maude Lucas Rumpler was born February 20, 1874 in Clayton, Illinois to Daniel and Mary Lucas. She moved with her family to Indianapolis in 1881 and she married Edward C. Rumpler there on December 20, 1893. She was the founder and first president of the Indianapolis Women’s Republican Club and was an active member and leader of a number of other local and state organizations, including the Indianapolis Women’s Department Club, the Indiana Federation of Clubs, the Inter Nos Club, the Caroline Scott Harrison Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Daughters of the Union 1861-1865, Inc. She passed away at the age of 93 on August 6, 1967.
