This collection includes photocopies of two letters written by Joseph Rothrock while he served with Company H, 81st Indiana Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. Sent to his sister Rebecca at Sharp's Mill, Harrison County, Indiana, the first letter is dated September 24, 1862 and was sent from Louisville, Kentucky and the second letter is dated May 27, 1863 and sent from Murfreesboro, Tennessee.

Biographical / Historical
Joseph Rothrock was born around 1834 in Crawford County, Indiana to Solomon and Sally Rothrock, early settlers of the county. He married Sarah Margaret Bell on May 24, 1860. He served in Company H, 81st Indiana Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War, mustering in on August 29, 1862 and mustering out at the end of the war on June 13, 1865. He passed away on February 14, 1871 and is buried in Thompson Chapel Cemetery in Harrison County. His sister Rebecca Lydia was born November 2, 1837 and passed away on January 11, 1897. Married to James L. Lynch on December 18, 1865, she was the mother of several children, including daughter Esther "Hettie" Lynch Gersham. Hettie was the mother of Ethel Gresham Fields, the donor of the letters in this collection.
