This collection includes a typewritten copy of the manuscript "Indiana" by Paul M. Ross. Written in 1947 while Ross served as executive director of the Indiana Department of Commerce and Public Relations, the manuscript presents information about the state regarding a variety of topics: physical characteristics, cities, population, natural resources, state parks and public lands, agriculture, manufacturing, transportation, banking, state government, local government, education, and history. There are a few handwritten notes with updated numbers regarding the state parks and forests from 1950.

Biographical / Historical

Paul Menzies Ross was born in Indianapolis on September 2, 1905 to Roy and Anna Ross. He was a graduate of Butler University and worked for many years in the newspaper business as a reporter and managing editor for The Clearwater Sun (FL), as manager of research and public relations for the Indianapolis News, and as Statehouse and political reporter for the Indianapolis Star. During World War II, he worked as acting publicity director at Butler University and was director of publicity for the Marion County, Indiana War Finance Committee and assistant director of publicity for the Indiana War Finance Committee. Following the war, he served as executive director of the Indiana Department of Commerce and Public Relations during the administration of Governor Ralph F. Gates and later as executive director of the Indianapolis and English foundations. He passed away at the age of 51 on August 19, 1957.
