Administrative History
The Nature Study Club of Indiana was founded in 1908 by William Watson Woollen of Indianapolis and was incorporated in 1914. Woollen, best known for his legal writings, was also an avid naturalist. On December 9, 1909, Woollen presented to the city, Woollen's Garden of Birds and Botany, commonly known as Buzzards' Roost, and soon after started the Nature Study Club of Indiana. The club was dissolved in December 1996.
Charter members of the Nature Study Club included prominent Indianapolis citizens of the time, such as Judge Robert W. McBride; Rev. Frank Scott Corey Wicks, founder of the All Souls Unitarian Church in Indianapolis; chemist John Newell Hurty; Chauncy Butler, an early minster of the Church of Christ in Indianapolis; James A. Rohbach, former dean of Indiana Law School; Willis Blatchley, Indiana State Geologist, and many others.
