This collection consists of three documents touching on the military career of Benjamin H. Griffith during the Civil War. Two are commissions to rank. The third document is the muster-out roll of a regiment commanded by Benjamin H. Griffith. The materials are dated from 1861 to 1864.

Biographical Note
Benjamin H. Griffith was appointed a second lieutenant of Company N in the County of Vanderburgh in the First Military District of Indiana. He commanded the 2nd Regiment of the Indiana Legion when it was called into service by Governor Oliver P. Morton in 1863. In 1864, Governor Morton commissioned Benjamin Griffith as captain of the Morton Guards of the Indiana Legion. The Indiana Legion was a statewide militia formed during the American Civil War for the protection of the state of Indiana, with particular focus paid to the southern counties to guard against Confederate raids. The Legion also participated in a host of other activities, including patriotic demonstrations, guarding of prisoners of war and recapturing Union dissertors.
