Scope and Contents
This collection consists of photocopies of Civil War records from the National Archives. These records specifically relate to the military service of Jacob Snider and provide support of the claim of Alfred Miller, guardian, for benefits for Jacob Snider’s minor children, under provisions of an act of Congress (approved July 14, 1862) granting pensions to children of deceased veterans. Most of the photocopied documents are muster rolls. Exceptions are an enlistment form, hospital records, and a guardian’s declaration for benefits for Jacob Snider’s minor children.

Biographical Note
Jacob Snider (also written as “Snyder”) was born in Miami County, Ohio circa 1827. He was a farmer in Delaware County, Indiana at the time of his enlistment in military service on September 2, 1862. He began a commitment intended to last three years as a private in Company E of the Eighth Regiment, Indiana Infantry, Indiana Volunteers. Jacob Snider was hospitalized at Good Samaritan Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri in February and March of 1863. He was transferred to the Invalid Corps in August of the same year. Finally, Jacob Snider died on May 14, 1864, at sea on the steamer Governor Chase en route from New Orleans, Louisiana, to New York Harbor.
Jacob Snider had two sons, Jacob Alexander and David Marshall. His widow married John Rarick of Delaware County, Indiana.
