Scope and Contents

This collection includes a variety of information on and from the McGovern family. These items included a typed summary of the origins of the McGovern family, a note from Phil McGovern about his life and growing up and a typed list of family members (with their relationships) and other typed reminiscences of family members’ childhood memories. The rest of the collection consists of typed and handwritten poetry written by various members of the McGovern family. The materials range in date from 1931 to 1976.

Biographical Note

The McGovern family originally emigrated from Ireland in 1824. Phillip McGovern, his wife Bridget and their seven sons landed in New York City on July 3 and moved to Martin County Indiana where they bought several hundred acres and started a farm. More of the McGovern family originally lived in Ireland before they, too, emigrated to the United States.
