Historical Note
Ripley County, Indiana was organized in 1818 and named for Ebenezer Wheelock Ripley, a War of 1812 veteran. Versailles is the county seat and there are eleven townships: Adams, Brown, Center, Delaware, Franklin, Jackson, Johnson, Laughery, Otter Creek, Shelby, and Washington.
"The Weaving of Ripley County" is a historical pageant performed on September 12, 1927 at the Osgood fairgrounds. Written and directed by Minnie E.Wycoff, the pageant was organized into seven episodes: "The Mound Builders," "The Indians," "The Pioneers," "The Builders," "Procession of the Townships," "Our Defenders," and "The Finale." 110 years of county history was presented through speeches and reenactments, including the defense of the blockhouse at Buchanan's Station, Morgan's Raid, pioneer church and wedding services, barn dances, corn husking bees, spelling bees, and fiddler's contests. Groups of performers from all eleven townships participated and a crowd of 8,000 witnessed the all day event.
