Biographical Note

John Wesley Violett (1795-1871) was born near Harper's Ferry, Virginia. Following the death of his father, his family moved and settled on Buck Creek near Springfield, Ohio. He served in the war of 1812 and then lived in Missouri for a few years before returning to Ohio in 1823. He married Chloe Bishop (1802-1875) in March 1824. The Violetts sold their farm in Clarke County, Ohio and moved to Elkhart County, Indiana in the summer of 1829. They were the parents of a number of children, including their youngest son, Benjamin (1843-1925). Benjamin was a private in Company E, 74th Indiana Regiment during the Civil War and served from July 1862 to June 1865. He married Caroline Squires (1845-1899) in July 1868 and they had three children: Myron (1869-1950), Mary (1876-1942) and Rose (1879-1972). Ben married a second time to Anna Frances Eliot James (1871-1856) and they had two children: Olive (1915-1976) and Benjamin Reith (1917-1989). The family surname was sometimes spelled Violette.
