Biographical Note

David Monroe Shoup was born on December 30, 1904 in Battle Ground, Indiana. He was a 1926 graduate of DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana, having lived in Covington, Indiana prior to entering the university. He married Zola DeHaven and they had two children. He joined the Marines on July 20, 1926 as a 2nd lieutenant, a 1st lieutenant by June 1932. He was promoted to captain in October 1936 and promoted to major April 1941. He had served in China; Quantico; Virginia; Pensacola, Florida; San Diego, California; Puget Sound Navy Yard and other assignments. He was promoted to lieutenant colonel in August of 1943 and earned a Purple Heart in the summer of 1943. He was promoted to colonel in November of 1943 and received the Medal of Honor, a 2nd Purple Heart and the British Distinguished Service Order while commanding Marines at Betio, a bitterly contested island of Tarawa Atoll during November 1943. He was promoted to brigadier general in April of 1953. He was promoted to major general in September 1955 and lieutenant general on November 2, 1959. He was nominated by President Eisenhower to be the 22nd Commandant of the Marine Corps, which the Senate confirmed. On January 1, 1960, he assumed his new post and was promoted to four-star rank. President Lyndon B. Johnson awarded him the Distinguished Service Medal on January 21, 1964, shortly after his retirement. He died on January 13, 1983 and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
