Administrative History
The Lafayette and Wild Cat Gravel Road Company was a private company maintained the Lafayette and Wild Cat Gravel Road near Lafayette, Indiana in the late 19th century and exacted tolls from people using the road. The road included a bridge over Wild Cat Creek, a new construction made after the old one washed away in 1855. The bridge was rebuilt with funds from Tippecanoe County, the Wabash and Erie Canal, and local farmers. When the Lafayette and Wild Cat Gravel Road Company was formed a few years later, the county commissioners donated the bridge to the company. In 1879, J. J. Shingley claimed the commissioners had no right to make that donation, nor the company to collect toll for its use. He therefore refused to pay his toll bill and was sued by the company, according to the Angola Herald.
