Biographical Note

Albert Sahm was an insurance executive and a life-long resident of Indianapolis, Indiana. He was born on February 4, 1859 to Ludwig and Charlotta Sahm, German immigrants who came to America in 1844. He married Ida Stone on April 21, 1880 and they had six children. Prior to his work in the insurance industry, Mr. Sahm worked as a manufacturer of upholstery (1880-1892) and engaged in the crockery business (1899-1908) as a member of the firm of Reveal, Schrader & Sahm. He was elected a county commissioner at the age of 21 and served two terms. When he was 35 years old he was appointed postmaster of Indianapolis by President Grover Cleveland. While working as postmaster, he became associated with the State Life Insurance Company and was appointed secretary-treasurer of the company in 1912. After stepping down from the secretary-treasurer position in 1934, he continued to serve as secretary of the executive committee and as a member of the board until his death at the age of 81 on December 4, 1940.
